Fitting a tank jacket

Tank jackets are easy to fit and a novice DIYer will have no problems installing one. Most jackets are made up of a number of segments held together by a cord tied around the top of the cylinder and a number of 'belts' around the tank. image of a fitted tank jacket

Before you buy, measure the size of your tank to make sure you get one that fits. They come in 3 sizes - 36"x18", 42"x18" and 48"x18". The jacket should be at least 3" thick. Check that it conforms to British Standards.

  1. Tie the tops of the jacket segments tightly around the pipe at the top of the cylinder and space them evenly around the tank so that the cylinder is totally covered, with pipes, thermostats and immersion heads in the gaps between the segments.
  2. Fix the jacket in place by pulling the bands, making sure that the straps do not compress the insulation too much. Where possible, segments should overlap slightly to prevent heat loss.
  3. Check that there isn't a gap of more than 2cm from the bottom of the cylinder.
