Glazing

About 10% of your heating could be disappearing through your windows. Double-glazing will cut this dramatically and, while it wouldn’t be cost effective to rip out perfectly good windows just to reduce heat loss, double-glazing is the best option if you are already looking to replace old windows.

Today’s Building Regulations specify a minimum standard of thermal insulation for replacement windows. This means that 'low emissivity' - or low E - double glazing is likely to be needed for all new and replacement installations. Low E glass has an invisible metallic coating which reflects heat back into the room. For more information, contact the Glass and Glazing Federation on 020 7403 7177.

If your budget doesn’t stretch to whole house double-glazing, consider installing it in the rooms you use the most and therefore heat and want to keep warm.

Alternatively, secondary glazing is a cheaper option which is easy to install and has similar energy saving properties.
